Hemas Consumer Brands Champions Youth-Led Action for the Environment

In celebration of World Environment Month, Hemas Consumer Brands (HCB) reaffirmed its enduring commitment to environmental sustainability by transforming corporate purpose into meaningful action. Demonstrating the power of leading by example, HCB partnered with its flagship brand ‘Dandex’ and the environmental advocacy group, Clean Ocean Force, to organise a beach cleanup at Crow Island, uniting undergraduates from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in a shared mission to protect Sri Lanka’s fragile coastline.

Marking a tangible step toward fostering a cleaner, greener Sri Lanka, the group collected more than 500 kilograms of waste, including 124 kgs of polythene, 80 kgs of plastic, 45 kgs of PET bottles, 68 kgs of glass, 67 kgs of discarded footwear, 60 kgs of mixed waste, 41 kgs of yoghurt cups and 22 kgs of Styrofoam, serving as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste disposal habits. The beach cleanup at Crow Island stands as a testament to the company’s long-standing belief that corporate responsibility should not remain confined to boardrooms, but that it must live and breathe through community engagement and everyday actions.

This initiative was a model of the spirit of collaboration and education as HCB turned the event into a powerful hands-on learning experience for the university undergraduates. The students worked side-by-side with volunteers and company representatives, with a sense of shared purpose to protect ecosystems. By engaging the next generation in sustainability efforts, HCB hopes to inspire lifelong environmental stewardship and empower young leaders to take ownership of the planet’s future. This initiative is part of a broader sustainability agenda championed by Hemas Consumer Brands, which includes waste reduction, plastic recycling and community-driven environmental education.

By initiating such purposeful partnerships and youth-focused programmes, HCB is actively modelling the values it hopes to pass on. By creating space for future leaders to participate, learn and lead, the company reinforces the idea that real change happens when words are matched with deeds. As Sri Lanka continues to face mounting environmental challenges, Hemas Consumer Brands is leading the way by inspiring a new generation to do the same.
